WELCOME | Andy Maher

A very warm welcome to you.

I am Andy Maher, an award winning amateur wildlife & nature photographer based in Cornwall, in the far South West of the UK.

My photography journey began during the November lockdown of 2020 whilst photographing some birds in my garden with my entry level camera. From then on I was completely hooked.

From what started as just a hobby got into something rather more serious. I did some research and upgraded my camera kit, and in September of 2022 I joined the Penwith Photography Group (PPG) and plucked up the courage to showcase my work in local photography competitions, winning the Cornwall Photographic Alliance (CPA) wildlife image of the year 2022.

Success has continued, and in 2023 I was awarded 3rd place in the Cornwall Photographic Alliance (CPA) wildlife image of the year.

In November of 2023, my image of 'Kestrel stoop' became the 'People's choice' winner in the Cornwall Wildlife Trust Photography competition after being on display amongst all the other finalists in Truro Cathedral in Cornwall.

This rare 'Once in a lifetime' shot was also published in the national press and gained recognition on local TV news.

My work still continues to earn placings and 'Highly Commended' recognition by judges in local club photography competitions.

My photography isn't all about winning awards and entering competitions. Being an avid lover of all things wildlife and being outdoors, there is nothing better for me and my own mental health than being surrounded by the sights and sounds of the birds and wild animals that most take for granted. Being able to capture these sights through the viewfinder of a camera, and being able to display my images for people to enjoy remains my objective, and if I'm rewarded for my work then that's an added bonus!

My website takes you through over 150 beautiful images, from Bird Behaviour to Portraits, Birds in Flight to Birds in the Environment, Wild Animals to Macro, plus an insight into the essential kit that I use and more.

I also take print requests that I can personally mount ready for framing. My prints currently grace walls from lounges in Cornwall to offices in San Francisco, USA.
