2022 proved to be a successful year for my photography, not only did I set up this wonderful website for you to enjoy my images, but I also went on to win the Cornwall Photographic Alliance best wildlife image for 2022 of the cross legged Sanderling on Marazion beach, a title of which I am extremely proud.
On an early bright evening at the beginning of the summer, equipped with my camera and telephoto lens, I headed to Marazion beach, just a few miles away from where I live. I parked the car and headed over to the beach, it was a warm, calm sunny evening and the beach was reasonably quiet, just a handful of people enjoying an evening sunshine walk. As I walked along the beach I noticed a flock of seabirds along the shoreline, the sunlight catching their beautiful plumage as they took regular flight over the blue sea and returning to the shoreline together in immaculate formation. I trod carefully down towards the shore, keeping away from the feeding birds which turned out to be Sanderlings which feed in small flocks, scampering back and forth after the waves, looking for insects, crustaceans, worms, fish and even jellyfish. I wasn't looking for a photograph of the flock, I wanted a photograph of a single Sanderling which was going to be a challenge due to their 'group' formation.
I positioned myself low onto the sand, on my stomach, camera ready, lens extended patiently waiting in the hope that the flock of Sanderlings that slowly approached me would cause one or two of these seabirds to split away from the group...and RESULT!! one Sanderling wondered away from the group and scampered towards me, with my camera now focused on the bird I took a sequence of shots and was delighted with this gorgeous image...an image that paved the way to becoming the Cornwall Photographic Alliance best wildlife image for 2022.
